There is an almost unbearable sadness permeating the new collection of short stories, The Light that Remains, by Ottawa author Lyse Champagne.
The six stories are all about refugees in different parts of the world during the past 100 years. Truly happy endings seem impossible.
These stories make us face the current Syrian refugee catastrophe and realize that we have learned nothing from the past. We have not learned how to restrain the racist dictators and generals who tend to create refugee crises nor how to repair the damage done by the evil-doers.
