Canada is joining its allies in tightening the screws on Russian President Vladimir Putin, with new trade sanctions meant to put further pressure on Russia’s teetering economy.
The new measures are in retaliation for Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its support for separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine. The measures target 20 Russians and separatist Ukrainian leaders, and prohibit the import of certain goods from Russia’s oil and gas sector.
The move comes days after the European Union and the U.S. also imposed additional trade restrictions against Russia, whose energy-dependent economy has been hit hard by the falling price of oil.
