Guly: What Syrian refugees have found since arriving in Ottawa


Three years ago, Canadians rallied around the federal government’s plan to resettle Syrian refugees who had fled a seemingly endless and brutal conflict in their homeland.
Ottawans, who have a history of helping asylum seekers, from the Vietnamese “boat people” in the late 1970s to Somalis a decade later, opened their hearts and wallets to the more than 2,300 Syrians who arrived in the capital in 2015 and 2016.
Syrian resettlement has become one of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s most successful first-term initiatives, and reaffirms Canada’s multicultural reality and reputation of attracting newcomers throughout its history.
