Maria Kostiuk’s story, remarkable as it is, was one shared by thousands upon thousands of Ukrainians whose lives were ripped apart by the Second World War.
It’s a story of deprivation, forced labour, shifting borders and refugees. It’s a story she wanted others to know so that they might know the evils of war.
“My mother talked about the war and her experiences often,” said Kostiuk’s daughter, Irene Lind. “She wanted the grandchildren to always know her story. She didn’t want her grandchildren to have to go though the war. The boys especially. She didn’t want them fighting in a war.”
