The Finnish Navy dropped small depth charges as a warning to a suspected submarine in the waters near Helsinki on Tuesday, various media outlets including Reuters and Agence France Press are reporting.
Finnish Defence Minister Carl Haglund would not say which country’s submarine is suspected of operating in his country’s waters. But all eyes are on Russia.
“We strongly suspect that there has been underwater activity that does not belong there,” the defence minister told Finnish media. “Of course it is always serious if our territorial waters have been violated.”
The depth charges were described as “grenade sized.”
