The Conservative government is offering a cool response to Russia’s appointment of a new ambassador to Canada, tempering expectations of a diplomatic breakthrough when the envoy arrives in Ottawa.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree Friday that removed former ambassador Georgiy Mamedov from the post and installed career diplomat Alexander Darchieva in his place.
Darchieva has extensive experience working on U.S. and Canadian issues. He is currently director of North American affairs at the Russian foreign ministry, and previously served as second-in-command at the Russian Embassy in Washington.
