It’s Canada’s national burial ground but beyond that people typically know little about Beechwood Cemetery. Located in Ottawa’s east end, its first burial took place in August 1873. John Alexander Craig was just three years old when he died, likely from one of the many diseases that threatened the populace of the day and pushed cemeteries like Beechwood beyond the city limits for fears they could infect people with the typhus, cholera and smallpox that took their periodic tolls.
