Independent of the very different politics on both sides of our border with the United States, we Canadians sometimes forget that our constitutional underpinnings are also quite different.
Americans have a congressional republic, with en elected Head of State, and three branches – executive, congressional and judicial – each with its own powers. The system was born through armed revolution against the British in 1776. Canada has a constitutional parliamentary democracy which evolved over decades from rule by fiat of the United Kingdom-appointed governor to responsible government with decisions taken by elected legislatures.
