KYIV—Ukrainians Sunday took another step in their long
struggle to free themselves from the shadow of Vladimir Putin’s Russia, holding
elections that were orderly, free, and fair. In a country in the midst of a
shooting war with soldiers sent by the Kremlin, the exercise in democracy was a
peaceful way to assert independence and remind Russians there is an alternative
to autocracy.
Putin annexed Ukraine’s Crimea Peninsula in 2014, a
move still not been recognized by the West, after Ukrainians had the audacity
