Officials say Russia secretly deployed a cruise in violation of a treaty that helped end the Cold War.
The New York Times, citing Trump administration officials, reported that the deployment of the new cruise missile system violates an arms control treaty banning ground-based U.S. and Russian intermediate-range missiles.
Moscow specifically deployed a ground-launched SSC-8 cruise missile that was being developed and tested for years.
The U.S. complained that it violated sections of the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty.
The Times said President Barack Obama’s administration attempted to persuade Moscow to correct its violation of the treaty while the missile was undergoing testing.
