Ukraine’s
military on Thursday said days of unceasing attacks by pro-Russian insurgents
had forced its soldiers to abandon a devastated airport that has become the
symbolic prize of the nine-month war.
Defense officials said fighting around the ruins of the Donetsk air hub — once one of eastern
Europe’s most modern and busiest — continued despite the deaths of six
Ukrainian troops and capture of 16 more by separatists overnight.
But they admitted that government forces controlled little more than a few
isolated buildings on the outskirts of a site that has turned into a crucible
