The White House is hosting Italy’s prime minister Friday for discussions on economics, European trade, Libyan violence and a deepening humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean region.
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi is visiting President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry in the White House Oval Office.
Italy, struggling with recession, also has been grappling with a surge of refugees fleeing violence in North Africa and the Middle East. It has played a lead role in rescuing those attempting dangerous Mediterranean crossings, but it’s straining to accommodate the humanitarian needs.
