U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has called for the withdrawal of all “foreign forces” from eastern Ukraine, after meeting Tuesday in Paris with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Kerry called for a halt to fighting between Ukrainian government forces and Russia-backed separatists around eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk airport. He said that “sovereignty” must be restored along the Ukraine-Russian border, and that independence referendums held by the separatists would not be recognized.
He also said Russian troops were withdrawing from Ukraine – a key condition for lifting sanctions against Russia – but that heavy weaponry has not yet been removed.
