German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it is “unimaginable” for Russia to participate in a meeting of the world’s leading industrialized countries as long as it is involved in the conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking to the German Parliament in Berlin Thursday, Merkel said next month’s Group of Seven meeting in Bavaria will not include Russia, which is accused of backing pro-Russia separatists fighting the Kyiv government.
She noted that Russia took part in the previous summit of leading industrialized nations in Vilnius in 2013, but that was before Moscow’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in breach of international law.
